The drains in our homes are one of the most vital components of our plumbing systems. Luckily, with a little bit of knowledge and know-how, DIY drain cleaning is simple and can be done with regular household products you already have laying around.
Ways To Clean Your Drain Yourself
If you feel like your drain could use a cleaning and want to avoid using harsh chemicals or having to spend unnecessary money, there are several do-it-yourself options that could solve your drain cleaning problems — and they only use a few things from your pantry!
Baking Soda (½ cup) & Vinegar (½ cup)
One of the most tried and true homemade cleaning remedies, baking soda & vinegar work by using the chemical reaction they create to agitate debris stuck in your drain. Slowly pour some boiling water down your drain followed by each ingredient. Carefully put the stopper into the drain so the mixture is allowed to agitate the clog, and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Afterward, flush the drain with more boiling water and repeat as needed.
Dish Soap (3-5 Tbs) & Hot Water (2 Liters)
Another very effective DIY solution that can be made with two of the most common household items, hot water and liquid dish soap work very well at handling clogs that are created by a lot of grease. Slowly pour a mixture of the two ingredients as many times as needed until the clog starts to improve.
Salt & Borax & Vinegar (¼ cup of each)
An upgrade to the traditional salt and vinegar, the addition of borax to the agitative properties of salt and vinegar greatly adds to the mixtures declogging abilities. For best results, it’s recommended that you mix the ingredients together at least one hour before use or until it becomes clear. Then, pour the mixture down the drain followed by hot water. Repeat as needed.
Vinegar (1 cup) & Ice Cubes
One of the best preventative drain cleaners is a combination of vinegar and ice cubes! Vinegar naturally cuts through tough substances like grease and partners with ice to scrape away buildup. Once you’ve cleared your clog, don’t let it happen again with a little bit of care every now and then.
