What is the difference between commercial and residential plumbing?

The primary difference between commercial and residential plumbing lies in the scale and complexity of the systems. Residential plumbing serves individual homes and small multi-family units, focusing on standard fixtures like toilets, sinks, and showers. In contrast, commercial plumbing deals with larger, more intricate systems designed for businesses, institutions, or industrial facilities. Commercial plumbing must adhere to stringent codes, accommodate higher water volumes, and incorporate specialized fixtures, such as commercial-grade water heaters and complex drainage systems. Due to these distinctions, commercial plumbing projects often require specialized expertise and equipment, making it a separate discipline within the plumbing industry.

What is the best drain cleaner to unclog a toilet?

The best drain cleaner to unclog a toilet is typically a toilet-specific plunger. It creates a seal around the drain, allowing you to apply force and dislodge the clog effectively. Chemical drain cleaners are not recommended for toilets as they can damage plumbing pipes and fixtures. If a plunger doesn’t work, a closet auger, a specialized plumbing tool designed for toilet clogs, can be a useful option. For stubborn clogs, it’s advisable to seek professional plumbing assistance to avoid causing further damage to your toilet or plumbing system.

Is a leaking bathroom ceiling an emergency?

A leaking bathroom ceiling can be considered an emergency, especially if the leak is severe, ongoing, or causing immediate damage. Water leaks can lead to structural issues, electrical hazards, and mold growth, posing risks to both your property and your health. If you notice a leaking bathroom ceiling, it’s essential to act promptly. First, turn off the water supply to the affected area, if possible, and collect any water in buckets or containers to prevent further damage. Next, contact a professional plumber or contractor to assess and repair the leak, as well as address any potential structural or safety concerns.

How do you hook up a pipe to a garbage disposal

To hook up a pipe to a garbage disposal, follow these steps:

Turn Off Power and Water: Start by turning off the power to the garbage disposal at the circuit breaker and shutting off the water supply to the sink.

Remove Old Plumbing: If you’re replacing an old disposal or plumbing, disconnect the existing pipes.

Install the Flange: Attach the flange, a circular metal piece, to the sink’s drain opening. Apply plumber’s putty around the flange to create a watertight seal.

Mount the Disposal: Hang the disposal unit by aligning it with the mounting ring and twisting it into place. Secure it with the mounting screws provided.

Connect the Discharge Tube: Attach the discharge tube from the disposal’s outlet to the drainpipe of the sink’s second basin. Use a slip-joint nut and washer to create a secure connection.

Connect the Dishwasher Drain Hose: If applicable, connect the dishwasher drain hose to the disposal’s dishwasher inlet using a hose clamp.

Check for Leaks: Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. Run water and test the disposal to ensure it’s working correctly.

Restore Power: Finally, turn the power back on at the circuit breaker to activate the disposal.

Ensure that all connections are tight and secure to prevent leaks, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific disposal model. If you’re unsure about any step, consult a professional plumber for assistance.

How do you fix a broken natural gas line?

Fixing a broken natural gas line is a highly dangerous task that should only be handled by trained professionals. Here’s what to do if you suspect a gas line break:

Evacuate: Immediately evacuate the area, ensuring that everyone is a safe distance away from the potential gas leak.

Call Emergency Services: Dial 911 or your local emergency services number to report the gas leak.

Turn Off Gas Supply: If it’s safe to do so and you know how, turn off the gas supply at the main shut-off valve. This is typically located near the gas meter or outside your home.

Do Not Use Open Flames or Electrical Devices: Avoid using anything that could create a spark or open flame, including lights, appliances, or switches.

Wait for Professionals: Wait for the gas company or a certified technician to arrive and address the broken gas line safely. Do not attempt repairs yourself, as this can lead to serious risks, including explosions and fires.

Gas line repairs should always be left to qualified experts who have the proper training and equipment to handle potentially hazardous situations. Safety is paramount when dealing with natural gas.

What is the best pipe for a gas line?

The best pipe for a gas line largely depends on the type of gas being transported and local building codes. Commonly used materials for gas lines include:

Black Iron Pipe (Steel): This is the traditional choice for natural gas lines due to its durability and strength. It is suitable for both underground and above-ground installations.

CSST (Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing): CSST is a flexible alternative to rigid steel pipes. It’s often used for indoor gas lines because it’s easy to install and resistant to corrosion.

PEX (Cross-Linked Polyethylene): PEX is occasionally used for natural gas lines in some regions. It’s flexible, cost-effective, and suitable for indoor installations.

Polyethylene (PE): PE pipes are commonly used for outdoor, underground gas lines. They are corrosion-resistant and durable.

The choice of gas line material should always adhere to local codes and regulations. Consulting with a licensed plumber or gas professional is essential to ensure the proper selection and installation of gas pipes for safety and compliance.

Can hydro jetting damage pipes?

Hydro jetting, a high-pressure water jetting method used for drain and sewer cleaning, can potentially damage pipes if not done correctly. The force of the water jet, while effective in removing blockages and debris, may harm pipes under certain conditions. Older or fragile pipes, such as those made of clay or Orangeburg material, are more susceptible to damage. Excessive pressure or improper nozzle placement can cause cracks, fractures, or dislodgement of pipe joints. To mitigate the risk, professional plumbers assess the condition of pipes before hydro jetting and adjust pressure levels accordingly. Properly performed hydro jetting is safe for most modern plumbing systems and can extend their lifespan by removing accumulated debris and grease.

What are leak detection methods?

Leak detection methods are techniques used to identify and locate leaks in plumbing systems, pipelines, or other structures. Common leak detection methods include:

Visual Inspection: A basic method involving a visual examination of pipes, joints, and fixtures for visible signs of leaks like water stains, corrosion, or dripping.

Acoustic Leak Detection: Using specialized equipment to listen for the sound of escaping pressurized liquids or gasses. This method is particularly useful for locating hidden leaks within walls or underground.

Pressure Testing: Increasing the pressure within a pipe or system and monitoring pressure drops to pinpoint leaks.

Dye Testing: Introducing colored dyes into a system to visually trace the path of leaks in drains or sewage systems.

Infrared Thermography: Using thermal imaging cameras to detect temperature variations that may indicate leaks or moisture.

Gas Detection: Utilizing gas sensors to identify the presence of gas leaks, particularly in natural gas or propane systems.

Smoke Testing: Introducing non-toxic smoke into plumbing systems to detect leaks by observing the smoke’s escape points.

Ultrasonic Leak Detection: Detecting high-frequency sounds generated by leaks using ultrasonic listening devices.

Each method has its advantages and is chosen based on the type of system, the suspected location of the leak, and the specific circumstances. Combining multiple methods can often provide more accurate results in leak detection tasks.

When should a house be Repiped?

A house should be repiped when the existing plumbing system shows signs of significant deterioration, frequent leaks, or when it poses health and safety risks. Common indicators for repiping include:

Frequent Leaks: If you’re experiencing multiple leaks throughout the house, it may be a sign that the pipes have reached the end of their lifespan.
Corrosion: Visible corrosion, rusty water, or a metallic taste can suggest deteriorating pipes.
Low Water Pressure: A noticeable decrease in water pressure could be due to interior pipe corrosion or mineral buildup.
Water Discoloration: Brown or discolored water may indicate rust or sediment inside the pipes.
Lead or Polybutylene Pipes: Homes with lead or polybutylene pipes should consider repiping due to health and safety concerns.
Frequent Repairs: If you’re constantly repairing or patching up plumbing issues, repiping can be a cost-effective long-term solution.

Consulting with a professional plumber is essential to evaluate the condition of your plumbing system and determine if repiping is necessary to maintain your home’s safety and functionality.

What’s Included in Plumbing Service Agreements?

Plumbing service agreements typically include a range of benefits and services designed to maintain and protect a property’s plumbing system. These agreements often encompass:

Regular Inspections: Scheduled visits by a qualified plumber to inspect and assess the condition of the plumbing system.

Preventive Maintenance: Cleaning, flushing, and tuning up various components to prevent clogs, leaks, or breakdowns.

Emergency Repairs: Priority access to plumbing professionals for urgent issues, often at reduced rates or with waived service fees.

Discounts: Discounts on parts, repairs, or additional plumbing services.

Extended Warranties: Coverage for repairs and replacements of covered components beyond standard warranties.

Priority Scheduling: Preferential appointment scheduling for service calls.

Documentation: Detailed reports of inspections and maintenance performed, helping homeowners keep track of their plumbing system’s health.

Educational Resources: Tips and guidance on plumbing care and maintenance.

The specific terms and offerings may vary among service providers, so it’s essential to review the agreement carefully and select one that aligns with your plumbing needs and budget.

What are the signs of a broken sewer pipe?

Signs of a broken sewer pipe include:

Foul Odors: Persistent sewage odors in or around your home, especially near drains or toilets.

Slow Drains: Frequent clogs, slow drainage, or gurgling sounds from drains and toilets.

Sewage Backup: Sewage backup into sinks, showers, or toilets, often accompanied by water pooling.

Patches of Lush Grass: Unusually lush or green patches of grass in your yard due to leaking sewage acting as fertilizer.

Foundation Cracks: Cracks in your home’s foundation or settling due to soil erosion caused by a leaking sewer pipe.
Pest Infestations: Increased pest activity, as broken pipes can attract rodents and insects.

Mold or Mildew: Excessive mold or mildew growth on walls or ceilings due to moisture from sewer leaks.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s crucial to consult a professional plumber to assess and repair the sewer pipe promptly, as untreated issues can lead to more extensive damage and health hazards.

Should you repair or replace your sewer line?

The decision to repair or replace your sewer line depends on the extent and nature of the damage. Repairs are suitable for localized issues like small cracks or minor clogs, where a specific section can be fixed without affecting the entire line. However, if the sewer line has extensive damage, multiple leaks, or is made of outdated materials like clay or Orangeburg, replacement may be the wiser choice for long-term reliability. Factors like cost, age of the system, and local regulations also play a role. Consulting a professional plumber for an assessment is crucial to determine the best course of action for your specific situation.

How much does it cost to convert a bathtub to a shower?

The cost of converting a bathtub to a shower varies widely depending on factors like materials, labor, and the extent of the conversion. On average, this project can range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more. A basic conversion with minimal changes to plumbing and fixtures may be on the lower end of the range, while a more extensive remodel with custom tiling, fixtures, and accessibility features can increase the cost. Additional expenses may include any necessary plumbing modifications and the removal of the old bathtub. To get an accurate estimate, it’s advisable to consult with a professional contractor who can assess your specific needs and provide a detailed quote.

How urgent is a slab leak?

A slab leak is a plumbing issue that requires immediate attention. It occurs when a water pipe beneath the concrete foundation of a home or building develops a leak. Slab leaks can lead to severe consequences, including structural damage, mold growth, and increased water bills. Ignoring a slab leak can result in the deterioration of the building’s foundation, leading to costly and extensive repairs. Moreover, the excess moisture from a slab leak can create an environment conducive to mold and mildew growth, which can pose health risks. Therefore, it’s crucial to address a suspected slab leak promptly by contacting a professional plumber to assess and repair the issue.

Is it worth switching to a tankless water heater?

Switching to a tankless water heater can be worth it for many homeowners. Tankless heaters provide hot water on demand, so you’ll never run out, making them more energy-efficient and cost-effective in the long run. They are also compact and can save space. However, the initial cost of installation can be higher than traditional tank heaters, and the payback period may take a few years. Factors like your hot water usage, location, and energy savings goals play a role in the decision. Consulting with a professional plumber can help you determine if a tankless water heater is a worthwhile investment for your specific needs and circumstances.

What is the most effective water filtration system?

The most effective water filtration system depends on the specific contaminants you need to remove from your water. Generally, a combination of different filtration methods can provide comprehensive purification. A few popular options include:

Reverse Osmosis (RO): Highly effective at removing a wide range of contaminants, including heavy metals, chemicals, and microorganisms.
Activated Carbon Filters: Excellent for eliminating chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and improving taste and odor.
UV (Ultraviolet) Purifiers: Ideal for killing bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.
Whole-House Filtration: Provides comprehensive filtration at all water sources in your home.

Choosing the right system involves assessing your water quality, conducting a water test if necessary, and consulting with a water treatment professional to tailor a solution to your specific needs.

What is the average life of a water heater?

The average life of a water heater typically ranges between 8 to 12 years. However, the lifespan can vary significantly depending on factors like the type of water heater (tank or tankless), water quality, maintenance, and usage patterns. Tank water heaters tend to have a shorter lifespan compared to tankless models. Regular maintenance, such as flushing the tank, can help extend the life of a water heater. As water heaters age, they may become less efficient and prone to leaks, which is a sign that replacement is imminent. Monitoring the condition of your water heater and replacing it when necessary ensures consistent hot water and prevents potential water damage.

What is the purpose of water softener?

The purpose of a water softener is to remove or reduce the concentration of minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium ions, from hard water. Hard water contains high levels of these minerals, which can cause various problems, including scale buildup in pipes and appliances, reduced soap lathering, and mineral deposits on fixtures. Water softeners use a process called ion exchange to replace calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions, effectively softening the water. This not only prevents scale buildup and prolongs the life of plumbing and appliances but also results in softer and more efficient water for bathing, cleaning, and laundry, reducing the need for excess soap and detergents.

Why is commercial plumbing important?

Commercial plumbing is crucial for several reasons. First, it ensures the proper functioning of essential facilities in commercial properties, such as restaurants, offices, and hospitals. Reliable plumbing is vital for daily operations, sanitation, and the comfort of employees, customers, and patients. Second, commercial plumbing systems must adhere to strict building codes and regulations to protect public health and safety. Properly installed and maintained plumbing prevents water contamination and the spread of diseases. Third, efficient plumbing conserves water and energy, reducing operational costs and environmental impact. Finally, prompt maintenance and repairs by commercial plumbers prevent costly disruptions, ensuring businesses can operate smoothly and maintain their reputation.

How does a backflow prevention system work?

A backflow prevention system safeguards the potable water supply from contamination by preventing the reverse flow of non-potable water into the clean water distribution system. It typically employs check valves and pressure-reducing devices. When there’s a sudden drop in water pressure, caused by events like a water main break or high water demand, the system’s check valves close, creating a barrier that prevents water from flowing backward. Pressure-reducing valves maintain constant pressure, reducing the risk of siphoning contaminants into the clean water supply. Regular maintenance and testing of backflow prevention devices are essential to ensure they function correctly and protect public health.

What chemical dissolves clogged drain?

One commonly used chemical to dissolve clogged drains is sodium hydroxide, also known as lye or caustic soda. It’s a strong alkaline substance that can break down organic matter, such as grease, hair, and soap scum, which often cause clogs. When mixed with water, it generates heat and creates a chemical reaction that can effectively dissolve blockages. However, it’s essential to use caution when using chemical drain cleaners, as they can be harmful to skin, eyes, and plumbing pipes. Alternatives like enzyme-based or vinegar and baking soda solutions are less caustic and may be safer for both you and your plumbing.

How long do plumbing fixtures last?

The lifespan of plumbing fixtures can vary significantly depending on factors like the quality of the fixture, usage, maintenance, and water quality. Here are approximate life spans for common plumbing fixtures:

Faucets: Quality faucets can last 15-20 years or more, while lower-quality ones may need replacement sooner.

Toilets: A well-maintained toilet can last 25-50 years, but components like flappers and valves may require periodic replacement.

Showerheads: With proper care, shower heads can last 10-20 years.

Sinks: Porcelain or stainless steel sinks can last 20-30 years or more.

Garbage Disposals: Typically, 10-15 years, but usage and maintenance play a role.

Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can extend the life of plumbing fixtures, while water quality and usage patterns can affect their durability.

What type of fittings do plumbers use?

Plumbers use various types of fittings to connect and join pipes in plumbing systems. Some common fittings include:

Couplings: Used to connect two pipes of the same size in a straight line.

Elbows: Change the direction of a pipe, typically in 90 or 45-degree angles.

Tees: Used to create a branch or intersection in a plumbing system.

Reducers: Connect pipes of different sizes to maintain proper flow.

Adapters: Connect pipes of different materials or types, such as copper to PVC.

Unions: Allow for easy disassembly of pipes for maintenance or repairs.

Flanges: Provide a secure connection, often used in heavy-duty applications.

The choice of fitting depends on the specific plumbing system, materials, and layout, and plumbers select fittings to ensure proper flow, stability, and leak-free connections.

What should be installed first when plumbing a building?

When plumbing a building, the first installation is typically the main water supply line. This line connects the building to the municipal water source or a private well. It’s essential because it provides the primary source of clean, potable water for the entire structure. Once the main supply line is in place, it branches off to various fixtures and appliances throughout the building, including sinks, toilets, showers, and water heaters. Properly installing the main water supply line ensures that the building has a reliable source of freshwater, making it a foundational step in the construction or renovation of any structure.

Liam fixed a long-standing problem with a toilet replacement. He had the knowledge, expertise, and patience to complete the job successfully, repairing problems created by the initial installation years earlier. It was obvious that the earlier install was by a wannabe handyman trying out plumbing. Now, no problems and even requested estimates for two future jobs that I know are needed. Excellent service from Vern’s Plumbing!
Brad Barker
We highly recommend Vern's Plumbing. Jessica was very friendly and professional when scheduling. Chris and his assistant were also friendly and professional. They arrived on the early end of the scheduled time frame and worked diligently to complete the job. Vern's pricing is fair, I don't feel they're out to take advantage of anybody, they're quick to respond, they do quality work, and the people are a pleasure. If that is what you want in a plumbing company, then you should definitely call them for your plumbing needs. We have dealt with several companies in the past three years for home improvements and repairs and have realized it's hard to find a company that checks all these boxes anymore. We appreciate that Vern's does!
Michael Norris
Called their office at around 4 o’clock expecting to schedule an appointment for the next day. The nice lady who answered the phone said let me check and see what we can do. She called back in a few minutes and said her tech could be own his way. I got home and he was waiting for me. Chris looked at my hot water heater and told me he could have it done by 7:30 tonight. He gave me an estimate immediately which I thought was a fair price. Another tech showed up with the tank and they went to work. They were very professional and knowledgeable about the heater and other questions I had concerning our issue. Would highly recommend them. Nothing but pleased with my experience.
Cathy Coyle
Vern's was very prompt in scheduling my appointment. Showed up on time. Very honest and reasonable pricing. Explained all they were doing. Can't say enough about the company and our service tech Bill. Highly recommend this company.
Bob Matteo
I contacted Vern's because I had a drainage system for 3 downspouts that runs under my driveway that was backing up and overflowing onto the driveway. They gave me a quote for power jetting the pipe and them putting a camera down it to verify it was clean. It turned out the pipe under the driveway was full of shingle grit and sludge (house built 20 years ago). They jet washed it and then attempted to put the camera in. The camera was too big to navigate the turns in the pipe. They then came back with a different camera that would fit the pipe and succeeded in shooting it to verify it was open. They had agreed to reclean the system if it proved to still be blocked at no added cost. They are very professional, responsive, friendly and explain everything they are doing as they go. I wouldn't use any other company for a problem that required investigation and testing to determine the cause.
David Perez
Outstanding service. Chris was great. Explained the full process in detail and then knocked it out!!Huge thank you to Jessica for making this happen today. She is to be commended. I can be a jerk sometimes.Highly recommend Vern's!!!! ✌️😎
Cristopher Lance
We had a problem with our water heater on a Saturday evening and Chris Wilson came by from Vern's to help us out. Chris was exceptional and intelligent and he guided us through what the problem was. He told us that he would be back the next day to replace our water heater. I definitely recommend this service for anyone who is looking for good quality work and prompt service.
Peggy Carder
We first called Vern's Plumbing a year or so ago to replace our water heater. It was a pleasant experience and we were impressed by the Bill, the technician and their prices were fair. When our bath tub faucet started leaking we called them again. From speaking with Reese in the office to schedule the appointment; to Chris, the technician that repaired our leaking faucet is was pleasure. Chris was friendly and very knowledgeable. We appreciate the professionalism and kindness of Vern's Plumbing. We will never call any other plumbing company but Vern's. We highly recommend them!

Recently had an issue with my well pump not working. Tried to get resolved with home warranty company without success. I called a local, well recognized plumbing company that wanted to charge me $5000-$8000 for a new well pump and pressure tank. A friend recommended Vern’s. Matt contacted me immediately and was at my house in an hour. Super professional and personable. He diagnosed the issue, and saved me thousands of dollars by properly diagnosing the issue and not trying to sell me something I did not need. They have won a customer for life. Can’t say enough good about Vern’s Plumbing and Matt for his help. Thank you!

Very satisfied with Vern’s Plumbing. I called to schedule a visit on a Wednesday and they were available next day. Liam came out and checked out the hot water heater and offered ways to keep it maintained. Also suggested other items that could be replaced when he was doing the walk-through. Liam also fixed the kitchen sink faucet that would not sit tight to the sink. Will certainly use them again for anytime plumbing!

Great experience with Verns. Liam the technician arrived on time, and was able to fix our leaky toilet in under an hour. He was professional, polite, and explained the process every step of the way. He even gave us a few tips to prevent further issues down the road. I highly recommend Verns, and ask for Liam!

They are all very nice at this company and so, easy to work with. They came early and worked on my drain, and thought the repair was complete but didn’t test using my washer. The next day I used the washer and it showed the repair wasn’t complete. So I called them back, they were nice about it, and finished the repair on the 2nd trip. No worries. I’m keeping their contact info for future use.

Excellent service! Bill Harper arrived on time, was very thorough, professional, and kept me apprised of every step of the replacement of my gas lines outside even with a couple of issues that occurred. He came out the same day called this week when I had an issue with the pilot light. Bill is a true asset to your company! I would highly recommend him and his team! You will not regret it!

Vern's plumbing is absolutely outstanding! I had an issue with my tankless water heater and they showed up earlier ready to go. Their technician (Chris) was extremely knowledgeable and professional. He was able to diagnose the problem right away and had the hot water running in about an hour. Great service, I can't say enough positive things about this company and its employees. I highly recommend them. Thanks again!
